Recycling guide: what, how and where can you recycle in order to help save our environment

23 Aug 2022

You are probably concerned for the state of our natural environment and are wondering how you can help preserve it. Surely, you’ve reached the conclusion that recycling is the best way that an individual can take care of our environment, adding our small contributions towards making it healthier and cleaner. In this article, you can read about what all you can recycle and how that helps protect the environment.

Small steps towards saving the environment

Every home has some single-use plastic cups, straws and bags lying around. These things that we accumulate in our homes sadly have a very bad effect on our natural environment. They degrade slowly over very long periods of time, during which they release harmful substances. These substances make it into our soil and water, and the polluted earth then grows the plants that we eat. In this way, we ingest these harmful substances into our organism.
With very small changes in our habits and minimal steps, each of us can help prevent this process and protect ourselves and the coming generations.
Single-use plastic cups can be replaced with paper cups. In addition to not being harmful to nature, they can easily be recycled. In the same way you can replace plastic straws with more eco-friendly solutions available in the market. You can purchase paper straws, or metal straws which, if treated properly, can last forever. Get into the habit of carrying a cloth bag to buy groceries, instead of taking a plastic bag every single time. A cloth bag might even be a fashionable accessory depending on the design. It does not pollute the environment, it can be reused many times, it is washable, can come in any design you like and fit into every bag and pocket. Not least of all, cloth bags are also fully recyclable.

Sort your waste

Whether you live in a house or apartment, you can sort out your waste for later recycling.
If you live in a house, you can file a request with your local authorities to set up special waste sorting bins in your areas, while in urban environments there are separate dumpsters for recycling.
The basic categories of waste for the needs of recycling are paper and cardboard, glass, metal and plastics. There are also special rubbish bins available in the market that have separate segments for these materials so you can organize your waste in your home more easily.

What can be recycled?

Many things that you use in your everyday life can be recycled. All packaging that comes with your juice, yogurt and milk can be recycled. Any PET labeled packaging from your household chemical products can be recycled, as well as any glass bottles and jars.
Packaging from your cosmetic products can also be recycled, just like tins, cans and other aluminum packaging. Old notebooks, paper that’s been written on, newspaper, magazines, leaflets and cardboard packaging.
All you need to do is deposit your packaging into its appropriate bin according to its material after you are done using it.

Recycling food – compost

Did you know that even your leftover food can be recycled? Compost is a mass that is used primarily as biological fertilizer and comes from recycled leftover food. In your home yard or terraces, you can set up a canister in a suitable size for your needs, where you will dispose of fruit and vegetable leftovers, eggshells, cardboard, leaves and water. The mixture should be stirred and grinded every now and then and can be very useful if you have plants.
Whether you have plants in your yard or terrace, this mixture is the perfect nutrition for them.

How to recycle textile?

Do you have old clothing that isn’t in good enough condition to donate and you don’t know what you could do with them? Recycle them!
Many retailers have programs that recycle textile. All you need to do is bring your old clothing to the local mall and find a store that recycles. This way you can empty your closet and protect our environment.

Recyclomats

In Belgrade but also in some other major cities in Serbia, we now have recyclomats. The role of these excellent devices is to help easy and straightforward waste sorting. You can also earn some money this way, or donate it to charity.
There are two types of recyclomats. One converts the packaging into food for stray animals, while others offer certain kinds of compensation. You can find the first type near large park and the way they work is that they dispense a certain amount of animal food after you put in the recyclables. The second type can be found in the streets of Belgrade and offers three options. After adding the recyclables, you can charge your bus fare pass, your mobile phone account or donate the money to a charity. The waste that can be sorted in these recyclomats includes glass, aluminium and plastics.

We hope that this article has made it easier for you to begin recycling and adopt small changes in your daily routines that can go a long way to help save our natural environment. All you need to start is a bit of good will.
